Creating Better Balance for Healthcare Workers

At Carenet, we see the patterns that connect the most complex aspects of the business of healthcare. And in an era where we are fighting for more accessible and affordable care for all, we must confront the mounting costs of inaction—especially those impacting our workforce.

Powering Change in healthcare means addressing these challenges at their root and creating the conditions for healthcare professionals to do the work they were meant to do.

Situation:

Burnout has been a growing crisis for hospitals and health systems. The Journal of the American Medical Association reports that more than 30% of nurses nationwide experience burnout, leading to reduced quality of care, errors, and many choosing to leave the profession. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the U.S. may face a shortage of more than 100,000 primary care providers by 2034.

Aging populations, rising costs, and workforce strain have compounded to create a perfect storm—threatening both access, outcomes, and longevity. The combination of an aging population bringing more people into our health systems needing care, rising costs, and the increased burden of administrative tasks, means the human costs are rising fast, while morale is falling even faster. If we don’t act, we risk a dramatic drop in accessible and affordable healthcare for years.

Solution:
According to Time, one-third of doctors’ time is spent on non-clinical tasks, contributing to inefficiency, wasted resources, and extra stress that fuels burnout. This is the area most primed for immediate intervention, leveraging innovative technology to remove that weight from the care providers.

By orchestrating automation with intention, through tools like AI, machine learning, and intelligent workflows, we can return valuable time and focus back to clinicians. These tools don’t replace human expertise; they protect it. When deployed thoughtfully, automation becomes a force multiplier that frees up clinicians to build relationships, solve complex problems, and operate at top of licensure.

Change Agent in Action:
One health system shared with Carenet that many doctors were spending hours off-the-clock tackling administrative needs, like answering emails and issuing prescriptions. Too much energy was focused on a screen instead of in the room with patients. Work-life balance for these providers was critically low, leading to feelings of burnout. The system was overloaded.

With smart application of technology and automation, the health system was able to greatly reduce the amount of responsibility on the doctors’ plates to synchronize prescriptions, align calendars, and tackle after-hours support.

Additionally, Carenet’s nurses were able to resolve 94% of after-hours calls from patients, meaning fewer disruptions for system staff. As a result, doctors could spend less time catching up on administrative tasks and reconnect to the purpose that got them into healthcare in the first place.
